Mother of Pearl

She has a lover, who wanted to marry her and make a life with her, but he was poor. So he went travelling by sea to make his fortune, so to speak. He went missing for many years, and people began to say he was dead and would never return. Her family kept trying to make her marry richer men, but she wouldn't forget the man she loved. After a few years of his absence, she got so upset by people talking and being pressured by her family, that she went to a hidden alcove on the beach, that only her lover knew of, and stayed there to wait for him to come back, clutching only a pretty pearl that he had given her as an engagement present. No one could find her, and presumed she ran away to find him. After a while, she became so heartbroken that she wouldn't eat or drink, and died where she sat in the alcove, and no one realised.
After a few more years, the man she loved returned, alive and well, and rich beyond his dreams. He had gotten lost at sea for quite a while, but finally made it back with enough money to look after his love until they died. When he asked for her, everyone told him she had gone missing and never came back. Distraught, he suddenly remembered their secret place, and went to check it. He found her skeleton, and a ragged dress he recognised as hers. In the dress he found the same pearl he had given her years before. Heartbroken and destroyed inside, he used his riches to build a beautiful tomb where their secret place was, made of pearls, shells, and crystal.
One night, when he was very old, he was laying in bed, suffering from illness, and he knew he was about to die. He felt a warmth around him, opened his eyes, and saw an ethereal, glowing image of his lover, smiling at him with her hand outstretched. Smiling, she told him that she's happy that he was alive, and that she never stopped believing in his return. He took her hand, and she told him that it was time for them to be together at last. He died happily.
